The Newbie Chronicles: Aperture

Hey everyone!  Welcome back to the Newbie Chronicles!  This week, we’ll be starting our talk about one of the most important things to understand when taking our photos: The Exposure Triangle.

Aperture

Shutter Speed

ISO

Let’s start with Aperture.

aperture

Think of aperture as the size of the opening in your lens.  The smaller the f #, the more light you are letting in your camera.  The larger the F#, the less light is getting in your camera.

When to use a wide aperature or lower F#:

Usually, I use a lower f # ( 3.5 and below) when I am in a low light situation. Such as indoors.  Because remember, when you use a lower f#, that opening in your camera is usually wider, letting in more light.  Another reason I would use a lower f# is when I want a shallow depth of field.

For example: I’m taking a photo of this plant on my kitchen table.   In the first photo, my f# is at 8.0.  You can see the plant. But you can also see the vase and chair in the background .

settings: f/8 SS:1/160 ISO 3200

In the second photo, I shot at f/2.8.  I didn’t move, just simply lowered my f stop.  Now, all that junk in the back ground is blurred out.  That is a shallow depth of field.

Settings: f/2.8 SS:1/1600 ISO 3200

When to use a high f # or small aperture:

I tend to use a high f stop when I want the whole imagine in focus, when I’m taking photos of more than one person, and when I have a lot of light.  Like this photo:

Settings: f/6/3 SS:1/30 ISO:6400

That’s it for this week.  Really, there is so much more to aperture, but I need to explain the rest of the exposure triangle to bring it all together.  I hope you all will stick around! Please stay tuned for next week when I will be talking about Shutter Speed!

As Seen in My Life: A Golf Lesson

C-Dub loves golf. Pookah loves anything C-Dub does. So of course, it being a nice day on Sunday afternoon, Pookah and C-Dub were outside for an impromptu golf lesson. Of course.

Favorites on Sweet Shot Tuesday

It’s Tuesday and this week, I’m participating in Sweet Shot Tuesday with Darcy over at my3boybarians and Favorites with Faith at Sweet Violet Photography and Design.

Pookah had just pulled out almost every toy out of the playbox. And he was just sitting in the middle of them.  SMH. I wanted to fuss, but he looked so cute!

Weekend Wrapup: Toddler Beds Suck.

How was your weekend??

Mine was……Ok.

The big news of the weekend was Pookah getting his crib converted to a toddler bed.

Now. CDub got it in his head that if he just converted his bed, Pookah would magically sleep all night IN HIS BED EVERYNIGHT.

Yeah…..

So, he decided to put it up on Friday night while i was at work.  He happly reported to me via text message that Pookah loved the new bed and was jumping up and down in it.

He later reported that he was asleep.

I came home at 8 am, and Pookah was where?

Not in his newly converted bed, but sound asleep in MY bed beside his Daddy.

Uh huh.

Then, Saturday night, i experienced the REAL deal with getting Pookah to sleep in that bed.

It took 2 1/2 hours to get him down.

HE alternated between wanting to lay down under the covers and PRETEND to sleep( snores and all) and jumping up and down in said bed.

I wanted to bang my head against the wall.

Then he was scared of the shadows.

Then he cried because he wanted my to rock him to sleep.

Then he wailed “I want Daaadeee”

Then, obviously sleepy, he just sat in his bed nodding off.

Finally, at my wits end, I called for his Daddy to come up and try. He gets all upset with me. You know, the usual, I don’t get no help comments.  Whatever. You do it. You converted his bed prematurely and you deal with it tonight. I was sleep deprived from working the night before and my patience was thin.

Nap time was just as bad on Sunday, and bedtime……

Sigh.

I hope it gets better.

Because I want him to do this.

blogshot

All night long, without a fight.

So I’ve decided that toddler beds suck. For now. They make my boy too excited. Too happy, to unwilling to sleep in them.  It’s like a game. Get in, get out. Get in, get out. Repeat.

BIG SIGH.

Such chaos.

But hey, that’s my life……

Project 52: Off Theme.

I’m not linking up to Project 52 over at my3boybarians because my photo doesn’t fit. The theme this week was shadows. And since I am so last minute sometimes( this week), I couldn’t come up with a photo for it! *hangs head low*. But, since I’ve fallen so behind on my 365 project, I’m trying to keep up with my Project 52 regardless! So, this is my photo of this week.

C-Dub’s mom sent all of his christmas presents in the mail. We got them yesterday and Pookah loved loved loved this.

The Newbie Chronicles: Photography tips for newbies!

Self Portrait

Self Portrait

If you’ve been living under a rock, then you don’t know that I love photography and all things involved in learning about it.  That being said, I’m going to start a new series on My Life called The Newbie Chronicles: Photography Tips for Newbies. I figured, everyone should have the knowledge to take great photos.  And if I get a little knowledge, I believe in paying it forward and sharing whatever I learn.  Sooooo. Every now and then( about twice a month) I’ll share a tip.

So the theme of this month( February) is the exposure triangle: Aperture, Shutter Speed and ISO.

But until next week, my first tip is this:

Take your camera off of auto, and shoot in manual.

It seems daunting, I know. But TRUST me, it’s the best thing you could ever do.

Yes, your photos might get worse before they get better.

But it’s worth it guys.

Gluten Free Lifestyle: Hidden Hazards

Pookah

Sooo, if you’ve been living under a rock, you don’t know that Pookah is allergic to wheat.

Yes wheat.

I’ll wait while you think of all the stuff he can’t eat….

So. He’s allergic to it. No, he won’t get diarrhea, no he won’t get a tummy ache.  He gets hives, his nose starts running, his eyes swell up, he starts wheezing, and then he stops breathing.

Yeah, so I’m really interested in not letting that happen.

Right now, my house is half and half in terms of wheat/gluten free items and regular items.  I buy gluten free items for school lunch and snacks and for home. But we still eat all the good stuff.

Problem is: Pookah is now at the age where he wants to try to eat everything. And as last week shows( when he got into Popeyes chicken and had a reaction), I need to just go ahead and eliminate wheat from my household.

This is hard. Harder than you think.

For instance: I thought I was doing a good job.

But for the last month or so, I noticed that Pookah had a rash in the creases of his arms and legs and under his arms. I thought it was his eczema.  But when Pookah got retested last week for his wheat allergy, I noticed that not only did the skin test turn positive, but so did those areas.  Those areas turned into hives.  Classic signs of Pookah’s allergy to wheat.

I thought about it.

And then thought about it some more.

But I was sure it was still his eczema.  Even though it seemed to come and go. Some days worse than others. Some days not there at all.

I was in the middle of getting ready to cook chicken, and I reached for my regular seasoning of choice when I’m in a hurry: Tony Chachere’s Creole seasoning.   Seriously, I put that S*** on everything.

Since I had just picked up a copy of Elizabeth Hasselbeck’s new gluten free cookbook, and had just read the part on checking the labels of everything in your pantry, I took a peak:

May contain wheat, soy and milk.

FOR REAL??

That explained EVERYTHING!!

I haven’t cooked with any in a few days, and the itching is better. The rashes have gone away.

But that taught me a lot.  I’m going through my spice rack, my cabinets, my pantry to completely eliminate ANYTHING that has wheat in it. It’s going to be hard, but it will be worth it.  I need to stop inadvertently poisoning my child. And yes, that’s what I’ve been doing.

So my house is going totally wheat free. Which in this current world means  TOTALLY GLUTEN FREE.

This is going to be interesting folks.

This is going to be a journey.

P.S. The photo above has been entered in Sweet Shot Tuesday over at My3boybarians. Enjoy!

My weekend and why I hate Flu Vaccines and Stuff

I was off this weekend.  The WHOLE weekend. It’s nice.  But I’m finding that even though I love my weekends off, I really don’t like it that my three nights a week are all crammed into 4 days.  Mon-Thursday.  Because if I don’t have Friday off, some of the weekend is gone from me sleeping it away.

27365

But anyway, it was a good weekend. Despite the fact that Pookah got his flu shot and a vaccine  on Friday and woke up Saturday morning with a fever.  I kind of expected that due to the vaccine. But by Saturday night, I knew he was going down.  Sunday morning he woke up with a low grade fever that he kept all day and a cough.  I hate the cough the most because I just spent the last 3 weeks with one.  So I KNOW how he feels. But being the resilient little guy that he is, he just kept it moving.  But I’m totally blaming the flu shot here. Especially since I debated practically up until the last minute whether or not to let him have it.

In other news, C-Dub and I had a discussion about *GASP* the next baby….

I’ll tell you a secret: I’ve got baby fever.  I’ve been fighting it. HARD.  But every time I go to work, there’s a newborn that I’ve got to hold, fiddle with, teach a mama how to feed etc.  It’s so IN MY FACE!  But I will continue to fight this urge for the rest of the winter, spring, summer.  I’ll revisit it in the fall….maybe…C-Dub didn’t actually seem to horrified at the idea like usual, so I think it’s a go…..in the fall…maybe….we’ll see….

Another secret:

I joined weight watchers for the 5011th time.  I haven’t felt hungry at all, stayed within my points and lost 3 pounds. *cue angels singing* Hallelujah!

I’ve been trying to run again.  But my knees are failing me. Especially my left.  But lucky for me, I work with a track coach and a die hard Black Girls Run member who both gave me a few pointers and pointed me in a new direction.  Number 1: I need to change my shoes( I JUST bought them! *cries*).

Well. That’s all that’s going so far this week! How was everyone’s weekend??
